Description
RESEARCH HAS FOCUSED on two major categories of situations that place upward pressure on alcohol consumption: social influences and stressors (e.g., Abbey et al., 1993; Cooper et al., 1995). Limited attention has been given, however, to examining these influences in different life periods. Furthermore, group comparisons often have focused on increased drinking in these situations across all respondents. This typical approach combines two variables that can be usefully separated: exposure to the situation and reactivity (i.e., the tendency to increase drinking if exposed to the situation). For example, it often is assumed that peer influences have more impact on the drinking of young adults than on that of mature adults. To evaluate this hypothesis, it is important to determine whether any such differences reflect young adults' greater exposure to peers who drink, greater reactivity to peers' drinking, or a combination of these factors. At a practical level, findings that consider life-stage differences and that separate the effects of exposure and reactivity may suggest where prevention and treatment efforts might be most effective--in trying to reduce exposure to the relevant social influences and stressors, to reduce the tendency to respond to them by drinking more, or some combination of these efforts.
